Online gaming merchants aim to build the best gaming experience for players—incorporating entertaining games and providing convenient payment options. While these aspects attract players to gaming platforms, responsible gaming practices ensure a safe and healthy environment for users.
According to a 2016 stats report by North American Foundation for Gambling Addiction Help, approximately 10 million Americans deal with gambling related problems. Responsible gaming provides players with resources to tackle problem gaming while also highlighting fairness within gaming operations.
With the rise of online gaming and sports wagering in the United States, online gaming operators have introduced tools such as: deposit limits, breaks, account closures, and self exclusion. These tools help in supporting players while providing a safer gaming experience.
Recently, a not-for-profit funded by BetMGM and Entain, The Entain Foundation US, launched a mobile app associated with responsible gaming. According to IGBNorthAmerica, Gamble Responsibly America supports players dealing with problem gambling through educational resources and tools. The tools include habits related assessment, harmful behaviour identifier, and a diary to record gaming and betting related choices. Additionally, the app also includes a 24/7 live chat function.
BetMGM CEO, Adam Greenblatt, explained the importance of responsible gambling, “Responsible gambling is a key focus for BetMGM and is critically important for the industry as a whole. We look forward to empowering our players with a proven program, designed to help support a positive gambling experience.”
Not only BetMGM, but other gaming operators such as DraftKings are also getting involved in promoting responsible gaming in the United States. In May, it was reported that DraftKings would contribute to the International Centre for Responsible Gaming’s sport wagering related research fund. The funds will be available for academic researcher(s) who are looking to study on topics related to the gaming industry such as the evolution of responsible gaming or how demographics plays a role in problem gaming experiences.
Apart from mobile applications and research, gaming operators are also offering responsible payment options—Mazooma is a great example. Mazooma offers bank account-based payments which means players can only bet with the money they have in their bank account—a much more responsible option compared to credit cards. Credit cards can be linked with overspending and additional fees or interest. Bank account-based payments also have higher acceptance rates on gaming platforms, whereas credit cards are sometimes blocked by a player’s bank.
While the most exciting slot game or the fastest payment solution might be the most talked-about components with regards to online gaming and sports wagering, it is responsible gaming that gives gaming operators a chance to connect with their users on a personal level. Responsible gaming is one of the most important aspects in the growing gaming industry in the U.S., where research, mobile applications, and payment options are being launched to support players dealing with problem gaming. With a strong responsible gaming program for players, online gaming operators and the players are bound to prosper.
